Freed from Captivity

Hello,

Maybe you saw the video this week where some divers off the coast of Indonesia rescued five Whale sharks that were caught in nets. It was heartbreaking to see these majestic creatures, which are filter feeders and pose no threat to humans, trapped and unable to escape. While I rejoice that they are now free, I despair that they were caught in the first place.

The Whale sharks’ inability to escape their own captivity, and their timely rescue, reminds me of the Gospel message though. We were once captives of sin, and, like the sharks, we were completely unable to escape on our own. But God, in his great love, sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to free us from our sins and to release us from our captivity.

This is where the Gospel story diverges. Jesus did not just save us to give us our old life back. He saved us so that we could be part of a better life, an eternal life, with him.

Perhaps it is time to embrace the freedom and life Jesus has given you?

Warm regards,
Gavin
