Overcome evil with good
Hello.
Is there anything that we can do personally to reverse the trend of evil?
Evil may seem the wrong word to use, and yet it fits. When we think of the injustice around us, and of how vengeance and retaliation dominate the world’s news, there’s no other word for it. Solomon was a king and a philosopher, and his comments resonate with us today, “the hearts of people are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live” (Ecclesiastes 9:3, Christian Standard Bible). It’s an apt description of our times.
So, can we do anything about it? The Bible implies yes, we can, and it begins with each of us individually. It’s a tall order, but with God’s help, it’s possible. The simple instruction is, “Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good” (Romans 12:21).
In other words, don’t let evil control our actions and reactions. We may be tempted to join in the world’s trends, but don’t. Rather join in God’s trend of grace and forgiveness wherever we go. Let’s ask God to help us do this.
Overcome evil with good.
Best regards,
James
