I’ll be there for you

The TV series Friends ran from 1994 to 2004 with its iconic theme tune, I’ll Be There for You.

Sadly, one of the main actors in the series, Matthew Perry, died this week. Perry although achieving fame in the series led a troubled life struggling with addiction to prescription drugs and alcohol. In his autobiography, he recounted that he had spent decades wrestling with God and that on one occasion, ‘I had been in the presence of God. I was certain of it.  And I had prayed for help. Everything was different following that experience. God had shown me a sliver of what life could be. He’d saved that day, and all days, no matter what. He had turned me into a seeker, not only of sobriety and truth but also of him.’

God was there for Perry in his darkest moments, and even in his death, God will be there for him. And the same is true for each one of us. In our darkest moments, even at our death, God will be there for us. He has promised that he will never leave nor forsake us and so we do not need to be afraid (Hebrews 13:5-6).

Jesus is our Emmanuel, God with us, who will be there for us at all times. What a friend we have in Jesus.

In Christian love.
