The promises of God
For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
2 Corinthians 1:20 (ESV)
Abraham believed in God’s promises, and it was counted to him as righteousness, as Paul explains in Romans 4:20-25: ‘No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.’
Throughout the pages of the Bible we can read about the many promises that God has made, and when we believe those promises, it is counted to us as righteousness. Take, for example, the wonderful promise made to every believer in Jesus Christ: ‘And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.’ (Philippians 1:6). And what is that ‘good work’ that God has promised to complete? It is to form the very image of the beloved Son in us (Galatians 4:19). As we surrender our lives to the Holy Spirit, the image or likeness of Jesus will be formed in us.
This promise is on the personal level. But on the cosmic level God has made an amazing promise. He is going to create new heavens and a brand new earth! (2 Peter 3:13; Isaiah 65:17; Revelation 21:1). As we believe these promises in the Bible, it is counted to us as righteousness. We trust God and know that he is perfectly capable and able to do whatever he has promised.
Prayer
Abba Father, thank you for the many promises that you have given to us, please enable us, by your Spirit, to believe these wonderful and amazing promises. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
