Just who’s got this?
Language is always changing. All you have to do to prove this is read a book written as few as forty or fifty years ago. Many phrases aren’t used anymore and even the vocabulary has changed – words are added to the dictionary every year. I’ve been reading C.S. Lewis and have had to look up words and references to unfamiliar books and historical figures.
One current, commonly used phrase is “You’ve got this.” It’s meant to be encouraging and affirming, but is it really? If you’re nervous, afraid, or not prepared, hearing you’ve got this isn’t really going to help. You might nod your head yes and repeat it to yourself, but you know you might not really have what it takes. I’ve never liked that phrase – I don’t tell others that or say it to myself.
There is one who has it all together, has what it takes and is the only one who can truly say “I’ve got this.” When we trust Jesus to fill in our gaps and give us the strength we need, we don’t have to be afraid or anxious. We can put aside our apprehensions and go forward in his grace, knowing that even if we fail, he’s got every situation and he’s got us. Next time you need a little encouragement or affirmation, remind yourself that “Jesus has got this.”
