Hope for the oppressed

Hello,

The pictures and videos released this week of children starving in Gaza have been hard to watch. How is it that, despite all of our technological developments and the advancements humanity has made, war and mass starvation still exists in our societies?

Do our world leaders have the desire and power to bring about a lasting peace? To feed those who so desperately need our help? Sadly, the Bible tell us to “put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.” (Psalm 146:3-4 ESV).

So, to whom do we turn to in these moments of despair over the injustice and oppression? The Psalmist continues by telling us to put our hope in the Lord “who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry” (verses 6-7).

God does not turn his face away like so many of us do when confronted with the terrible atrocities of this world. Jesus knows what it was like to hunger, to be oppressed, to die at the hands of his enemies. He knows what it is like to suffer because of the cruel and heartless decisions of those in leadership.

But Christ’s story did not end there. And neither does our story or the stories of all those suffering around the world. On the cross Christ defeated death. Because he was raised from the dead, there is hope for the world. The time of justice for oppressed is coming, a time when there will be no more hunger, or pain, or suffering.

Come Lord Jesus, come.

Gavin
