Someone like you Jesus

As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”

Romans 10:11 (NLT)

As children we all want to be someone else. We dreamed of who we could be when we grew up. We had no doubt we could be this person, whether it was a cowboy, astronaut, or a mom or dad. The limits of this world had not been put upon us yet. We just knew we wanted to be somebody with importance and approval. Approval, that is the word, approval and not disgrace of failure. We wanted to be someone everybody liked and looked up to. I think my dreams crashed somewhere around sixth grade.

The world hides behind many disguises. There is the picture we want to display to the world on our many social networks, which may or may not be who we really are. We as adults are still trying to be that ‘somebody’ everyone approves of. Even the emoji’s we create for our emails are who we wish we looked like. I do not think they have one with all the wrinkles and age spots like I have. We spend a lot of time worrying about what the world thinks of us. I know I do; I admit it.

So, when I read Romans 10:11, I first thought about my own disgraces and how I can remedy them. I cannot of course, this is where Jesus comes in to make the changes in our lives that we cannot make ourselves. If I believe in myself or in the ways of this world, disgrace is not far behind, but if I put my trust in Jesus, he will not judge me by my gender, my culture, my abilities, age or appearance.  You see Jesus looks at us through different eyes than we do. Jesus takes my disgrace away.

Yet, there is more to this verse than just my character, reputation, and appearance. It is about who Jesus is; he is someone I can trust and rely on. Jesus is that perfection I have been trying to find. The world will disappoint, and I will disappoint someone at one time or another, but I will not have to fear Jesus disappointing me. Putting my faith and trust in Jesus is the sure foundation, one safe to build on as Isaiah tells us, ‘Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken”’(Isaiah 28:16).

I want to build my life on the security and examples of Jesus. I need to trust him, for he will not disappoint or bring me disgrace; in fact, he will remove my own. I want to be someone like Jesus. Jesus is Lord of all, and he richly blesses everyone who comes to him (Romans 10:12-13). This is the good news that I share.

Prayer
Merciful God, you have called us to share with the world the wonderful things you have done for us. This world is not stable, but you have brought your stability into it. Thank you, God, for allowing us to work alongside you and within your plan for us. You have given us hope for the present and for the future. We know we can count on you, for you are always faithful to us and you are a God of truth and goodness. We want to be someone like you Jesus, and we know that you will guide us all on our own personal journey, to be the ones you made us to be. We thank you God! In Jesus, we pray, Amen.
