Chosen

No, God has not rejected his own people, whom he chose from the very beginning. Do you realize what the Scriptures say about this?

Romans 11:2 (NLT)

Have you ever sat alone hoping someone would notice you? I was what some call ‘a wallflower’ growing up. I went to the dances alone because no one invited me. I sat alone listening to the music; my feet tapping out of the rhythm, but no one stopped to ask if I wanted to dance. I did feel like I was part of the wall I was leaning against, but I was too shy to join in the fun of what seemed like only others were included in. I felt rejected.

God chose a special person called Abraham and out of him grew a people whom God loved and called the nation of Israel. Though God chose them, they did not always stay faithful; they often transgressed and drifted from the God they were blessed by. They chose to drift away, and in doing so they drifted away from the blessings God held out to them. Though God may have been angry with the choices they made, we are told in verses 1-2 of Romans 11, that God did not reject them. He was always waiting for their return to him. This theme plays out over and over again in God’s word to us in the Old Testament. We were unfaithful, but God is faithful, and waiting for our return to him so we can experience his love once again.

Yes, God chose Israel, but he also chose you and me. We were loved and chosen ‘from the very beginning.’ We were his before we were born. You may know this fact, but do you believe it? Do you really believe it deep down in your heart? I had already accepted my rejection in my mind from the things that happened in my life, but was it real? No, but I lived it out thinking that there was nothing I could ever do about it; that is until Jesus pointed out his love for me. I was not rejected by him, just as you are not. Jesus loves you and he always will. Think of that love for a moment, a love that stays no matter how many times we mess up or push him away; it is hard to comprehend, but it is real.

I admit that I still have a hard time with the fact that someone loves and accepts me, that I am good enough. God reminds me often, when I feel alone, that I will never really be alone. There will always be four of us he says: you, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. We need that reminder, that spiritual hug. It gives life to our souls, and joy and peace in our hearts. We are his and he will never let us go. God has not rejected his people, whom we all are; we are special, chosen, and loved!

Prayer
Merciful God, you are all we need in this world. You remind us often of your love for us, and your faithfulness is constant and eternal. Thank you God for choosing us as your own and for giving our lives such a great purpose. Forgive us of all the times we ran away and strayed, of the time we doubted your love. We give you our love and praise God! In Jesus we pray, Amen.
