It’s all about alignment

When the tires on your car get wonky, you take it to a shop and get them aligned. Our spines can become misaligned, and some people rely on a chiropractor to get them back where they should be. All kinds of mechanical things and gadgets can also suffer from this condition and there’s usually a fix. But what about when our thinking gets out of alignment? And while it’s easy to know how tires should be aligned, sometimes we need a reminder as to what – or with whom – our minds should be aligned.

Repentance and realignment are closely related. Repentance of course, means turning away from sin and turning toward God – a change of mind and heart that leads to a transformed life. ‘Realignment, in a biblical context, (according to a topical Bible), refers to the process of adjusting one’s life to align with God’s purposes and commands. It is closely related to repentance, as true repentance leads to a realignment of priorities, values, and actions in accordance with God’s Word.’

When we experience a true realignment, the Holy Spirit works with our spirits to bring us closer to God’s way of thinking, to his way of seeing ourselves and the world. We can acknowledge sin and say we’re sorry for it all day long, but until we stop trying to work things out on our own and quit trying to make ourselves into better people, it won’t happen. Becoming aligned with God, becoming like Jesus and being transformed into a new creature is his work, not ours and he will do it as we cooperate with him.

Just as we can’t align our own tires, we can’t align our own minds and hearts to God. We need to take ourselves to God’s shop, daily, if not hourly, so he can lovingly bring us in sync with himself.
