Part of a series – Extraordinary women in the Bible
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27 (NIVUK)
The value of women in Scripture begins at creation: when God formed humanity, he created both man and woman in his image. Eve was not an afterthought or a secondary creation, she was intentionally designed to reflect God’s nature alongside man. A woman’s identity is rooted in the image of God. This means that from the very beginning, women carry divine dignity, purpose, and worth.
As we journey through the Old Testament, we see that God consistently calls women into significant roles. For example, Deborah stands as a bold leader, guiding a nation with wisdom and courage (Judges 4 and 5). Esther risked her life before a king to save her people, trusting that she had been placed ‘for such a time as this’ (Esther 1-10). Ruth chose loyalty and faith over comfort and security, stepping into an unknown future that God would richly bless (Ruth 1-4). These women were not passive observers – they were active participants in God’s unfolding plan. Their stories remind us that God does not limit his calling based on gender.
When we arrive at the New Testament, the ministry of Jesus brings a renewed and powerful affirmation of women’s value. In a culture where women were often overlooked, Jesus consistently honoured them. He taught them, healed them, and welcomed them as followers. For example, Mary of Bethany is famously depicted sitting at Jesus’s feet as a devout disciple and listener, while Mary Magdalene became the first witness of the resurrection, chosen to carry the message of hope to others. Jesus did not treat women as secondary; he restored their dignity, affirmed their voices, and included them in his mission. This reveals the heart of God – he sees, values, and lifts up women.
After Jesus’s resurrection, women continued to play essential roles in the early church. For example, Priscilla helped teach and disciple believers, demonstrating theological depth and leadership. Phoebe served as a trusted leader and messenger, entrusted with important responsibilities. And Lydia opened her home and resources to support the growth of the church. These women show us that the work of God has always included women as leaders, supporters, and teachers. The church was strengthened because of their faithfulness.
Today, God continues to call women to participate in his life and mission in powerful ways: to lead with wisdom, love with compassion, stand with courage, serve with humility, and walk in faith within families, communities, churches, and beyond. Every woman has a purpose, and her life matters deeply in God’s plan.
In this series of studies, we will explore some of the extraordinary women of the Bible whose inspirational lives can act as a catalyst for women (and men) to embrace their spiritual giftings to witness the glory of God, and to strengthen the work of the Church.
Prayer
Loving Father, thank you that women are deeply valued by you, and thank you for Jesus’s loving affirmation of women and for their examples of faith, courage, and wisdom we see throughout Scripture. May women be seen as you see them: with dignity, purpose, and worth, and please empower women to walk boldly in their calling, in Jesus’s name, Amen.
