Fellowship With Christ

“God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.”
1 Corinthians 1:9 (NIV)

There are two very important messages in the scripture above. The first is that God has called us into a friendship relationship with Jesus Christ. And the second is that God is faithful—he can be trusted to fulfil all of his promises.

According to the dictionary, the word “fellowship” means companionship, association, close friendship, friendliness, warmth of feeling, community of interest, participation. Jesus also confirms that he wants a friendship relationship with us. “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15). It is a great honour, privilege and blessing to be counted amongst God’s friends. To be a friend of Jesus is our calling. Fellowship with the Son, also means fellowship with the Father and the Spirit. We have been called into fellowship with a Triune God! (1 John 1:3; 2 Corinthians 13:14). It also includes being called into his kingdom, “encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory” (1 Thessalonians 2:12).

Because God is faithful, he will not change his mind about calling us into a friendship relationship with his Son. It is irrevocable. It cannot be revoked or rescinded (Romans 11:29). Our lives will only be content and fulfilled when we fall in line with our calling—friendship—with the Son of God.  It is the purpose for which we were born.

Thank you, Father, for sending Jesus to be my friend, a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
