This week the news has been full of heart rending pictures of crowds gathered around Kabul airport as many seek a way to flee Afghanistan. Among those fleeing are some who have been assisting British armed forces and interests in the country over the last 20 years.
The Bible is not silent on the topic of refugees. Leviticus states “the foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself”. Leviticus 19:34 NIV At times of world crisis, it can be easy to think of all the problems that refugees will cause – all the reasons why it is impractical to help others who are clearly in need.
Yet the Christian cause is a call to love others even when it is costly. Because it is through the costly sacrifice of Jesus Christ that we, who were also once without hope, are "no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household”. Eph 2:19 NIV
In their time of need, let us stand with those who seek our help.
