This week American Musician Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for Literature, and some of his work seems as relevant now as it did in the 1960s. His songs often echo the prophetic styles of the biblical Old Testament, and they address the parlous state of the world today. For example, from his Masters of War in 1963:
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
That I can see through your mask...
Nothing much has changed, has it? When will we ever learn? Will peace ever come to the earth? Another poet, a man called Zechariah, who lived over 2,500 years ago, spoke of a time when war will cease. He said the answer is that God will intervene. Listen to what God will do:
I will take away the chariots..and the warhorses.. And the battle bow will be broken... He will proclaim peace to the nations. Zechariah 9:10 NIV
The Good News is that Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is coming again.
