It has all the hallmarks of a fairytale romance; the story in the news this week about a princess who wants to marry a commoner. 25 year old Princess Mako, the eldest granddaughter of Emperor Akihito, has announced her intention to marry outside of Japan’s royal household. If the marriage goes ahead, under Japanese law she will be required to give up her royal title and leave the cloistered imperial household to live in the outside world.
It’s a riches to rags account. In effect, the Princess will be swapping status for love.
The bible tells us a similar story, this time of a prince who gave up his position in a royal household in order to marry his bride. But to save his beloved, the prince lost his life and the saga ended with bitterness and tears.
The prince was Jesus. His bride, humankind. His motivation? A love far greater than any human love. A love so great the prince was prepared to die in our place. And die he did.
This was no fairytale romance, but it does have a happy ending. The prince was restored to life and reunited with his royal household, promising to return to his bethrothed with a bequest – the gift of eternal life.
It is wonderful news that all of humanity has the opportunity to participate in the glorious future. We wish Princess Mako and her husband-to-be well and hope they too live happily ever after.
All the very best,
