With the US election dominating the news this week, I’ve been reflecting on how often election promises have been broken by past presidents.
Woodrow Wilson won the election in 1916 with the slogan, “He kept us out of war” only to take America into World War 1 a year later. George Bush snr. famously promised in 1988, "Read my lips: No new taxes," only to sign a bill raising taxes during his first and only term.
And more recently, Barack Obama vowed repeatedly during the 2008 election to close Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba, but the prison remained open throughout his Presidency
Compare that with Jesus, who while neither a president nor a politician is called a leader by 2.4 billion Christians globally. None of his many promises has been broken, including the one that said he would die to save the world, then rise again bringing the gift of eternal life to any who believe in him.
That’s a promise no politician could ever make, let alone keep, but which you and I can surely count on.
All the very best,
