This week in her new TV series, Home Sweet Home, Joanna Lumley visited the town of Derry and interviewed a local man by the name of Richard Moore. You may have heard of him; his story is remarkable. At the age of 10, he was hit in the face by a rubber bullet that caused him to lose one eye and be permanently blinded in the other. Years later he sought out the soldier who fired the shot and forgave him. The two became good friends.
Why did Richard Moore forgive the man who took away his sight? In a recent interview, he explained, “Being angry at someone else is like drinking a cup of acid and expecting the other person to die”. He later added, “Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself”.
Now consider the tale of another victim of injustice, a local man from Nazareth by the name of Jesus. You may have heard of him; his story is extraordinary. He was sentenced to death, despite being innocent of all charges against him, and as his life ebbed away, he prayed “Father, forgive them; they don’t know what they’re doing”. Luke 23:34-35 MSG
Why did Jesus forgive those who took away his life? Because he was God and God is love, and he shares the gift of forgiveness with all of us.
All the very best,
