Your Personal Ceasefire
Hello.
Among this weekend’s main news stories is that of the release of hostages and prisoners following a temporary ceasefire declared by both Hamas and Israeli leaders.
This will also be a time for those caught up in this atrocious war to grieve for their dead.
I’m reminded of the story in Genesis 25 when Isaac, from whom Jews claim descent, and Ishmael, from whom Arabs claim descent, put aside their differences and came together to grieve for and bury their father, Abraham. Is there a lesson in there somewhere?
As for us, is it about time that we declare a ceasefire in our own lives? Not just a temporary one, but a permanent one. Perhaps there are those with whom we disagree strongly, or others whom we regard rightly or wrongly as enemies for one reason or another, or we’re determined to get revenge on someone who has hurt us, or there’s a family history of arguments and hostility.
Paul told the divided Roman church, “If possible, on your part, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18, from the Holman Christian Standard Bible).
Let’s mourn with those who mourn…
…and embrace your personal ceasefire.
Best regards,
James
