The forgotten war

Parma - The fresco of Macacre of Inocents in Duomo by Lattanzio Gambara (1567 - 1573).

Hello,

With the escalating developments in the Middle East, other wars, such as the Russian-Ukraine crisis and the conflict in Sudan, seem to be receiving less airtime in the news, but sadly they continue in full force.

There’s another ongoing forgotten war, a spiritual one that seeks to suppress the good news of our Saviour’s birth. In the twelfth chapter of the book of Revelation we read that the devil, described as a dragon, was ready to devour Jesus at his birth. We can witness his fury when we think of the slaughter of the innocents at the hands of King Herod.

“Devour” is an interesting word. It suggests eating quickly and leaving no trace of the victim, just as a ferocious lion might devour its meal completely, leaving little evidence behind. Does Satan still want to destroy the child? To oppose the hope that the child Jesus brings, and to eradicate fully the wonderful news of God’s grace that the upcoming season is all about?

As for us, despite the worrying state of the world and despite Satan’s hostility, let us join with the angels in declaring God’s glory and peace on earth through Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Warm regards,
Gavin
