Precious in God’s sight

Open treasure chest filled with gold coins / HIgh contrast image

Hello.

Have you every wondered what God thinks of you?

A recent news article reported that, in 2022, there were over 53,000 archaeological finds that had been found in the fields and waterways of the UK. Many of these were classified as treasure.

This reminded me of one of Jesus’ greatest parables. Speaking to a large crowd who had gathered by a lake to hear Jesus speak, he explained that ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” (Matthew 13:44 NIV).

What are we to make of these words? One possible interpretation is to compare Jesus to the spiritual treasure that the man found, but is there another way of looking at it?

Jesus came to seek and to save sinners like you and me, with joy he found us in the muddy fields of this world, and he gave up his riches to secure us (even dying to save us on the cross). From this perspective, we are the treasure, the pearl of great price in God’s eyes.

While you may not always feel valued by the world around you, remember – you are precious in God’s sight.

Warm regards,

Gavin
