Seeing the face of God
Hello.
The other day I passed by two public speakers as they addressed those who had gathered around them.
The first was an Islamist, who objected to the Israeli attacks on Gaza. The second was an Asian Christian, who announced that Jesus saves to a noticeably smaller crowd. Both men were shouting through their microphones so that they could be heard in the bustling city streets.
I was torn. They made me feel uneasy, and, at the same time, I wondered what Jesus might proclaim to this mixed-up world. Of course, Jesus was concerned for people caught up in the atrocities of war and he said that he was the way to salvation, but…was that it? Was there anything else to it?
Yes, there was and is more. Christ not only told everyone everywhere to love one another, but he also explained that, whenever we help others, such as in giving a hungry person a simple bowl of soup, we in effect help Jesus himself: “When you helped them, then you also helped me”, he told his disciples (Matthew 25:40 EASY translation). It reminds me of the well-known quote from Victor Hugo, “to love another person is to see the face of God”.
So, if we want to make a difference in this crazy world, where could we begin?
Let’s love one another and do kind things to those near and far.
In so doing, it’s a bit like looking at the face of God.
