Pointless?

Hello again

If you have ever watched the TV game show Pointless, it seems you are not alone. The popular programme has had a peak of 7 million viewers since its launch in 2009. As the name suggests, the aim of the game is to be the team with the lowest score at the end of the show.

In real life, however, pointlessness is less of a winning trait and more of a worrying trend. In a UK-wide survey in 2019 almost 90% of people between the ages of 16 and 29 reported that their lives had no meaning or purpose.1

Whilst there are no easy answers to what looks to be a growing problem amongst our young people, I don’t think it is trite to say that we Christians have a message of hope to offer. Jesus said, in John 10:10 “I came to give life—life that is full and good.” The Christian life is the antithesis of pointlessness. It is a life of caring and sharing, one that is filled with purpose, joy and hope.

So, if you happen to speak to someone who says their life is meaningless, don’t let your conversation be pointless. Find a way to point them to the One who has the power to change hearts and minds, and transform lives.

Kind regards

Peter Mill
