God’s living and enduring word
Hello.
Death, taxes, and justice come to us all. This week, following alarming news from both sides of the Atlantic, I was reminded of the famous poem by James Shirley:
“Sceptre and Crown
Must tumble down,
And in the dust be equal made
With the poor crookèd scythe and spade…
Only the actions of the just
Smell sweet and blossom in their dust”.
Of course, there is another way in which we are all equal and this is mentioned in Galatians 3:28 (NIV): “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”.
This is because Jesus died and rose for all people, from poor peasants to presidents, politicians, and princes, from commoners to kings, knights, bishops, and lords. In God’s eyes, irrespective of status, race, religion, or gender, such was his love for us that he sent his only Son to remove our guilt and restore us to grace. In a sense we were all guilty as charged but we have been pardoned through Jesus Christ.
Receive God’s pardon.
Kind regards,
James
