Be a good citizen

A photo of different passports (of different nationalities)

Hello.

When you look at the world news, most governments today seem to lurch from crisis to deeper crisis. So far this month we’ve witnessed how politicians disagree and argue in the US, France, Israel, South Africa, and elsewhere, not forgetting here in the UK!

What should Christians do in such circumstances? Even though we are citizens of heaven, each of us waiting for the return of Jesus Christ, the Bible makes it clear that we should pray for kings, presidents, and leaders that they may be more Christ-like in their private lives and in the policies they promote.

The apostle Peter, in writing to Christians who were subject often to tyrannical regimes and political volatility, had this to say to them and to subsequent generations, “Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it. Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul. Live an exemplary life in your neighbourhood so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives. Make the Master proud of you by being good citizens…Exercise your freedom by serving God, not by breaking the rules. Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government” (1 Peter 2:11-17 The Message).

Wherever you live, whatever you do and say, let’s witness to Jesus in this crazy, mixed-up world.

Warm regards,

Gavin
