Is life a lottery?

Hello again

What were you doing in 1994? That was the year Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa, the Channel Tunnel opened and the retail colossus, Amazon, was launched

Also, on 19th November of that year, the first National Lottery draw took place, with its now famous catchphrase, “It could be you” – a promise that has come true for the 7,400 millionaires created by the Lottery over the last 30 years.

What are the chances of winning the jackpot? It is currently higher than 45 million to 1. If you find those odds staggering, consider the odds of winning something far more valuable: your life. Harvard scientist Dr Ali Binazir estimated the probability of you or I being born at about one in 400 trillion [1].

Another idea is less random but, for me, more plausible. God knew you long before you were born and was with you as you developed in the womb (Psalm 139:13). Later, he sent Jesus to choose you and appoint you to go out and bear fruit (John 15:!6).

As Christians we have not just an explanation, but a plan and a purpose for our existence. To go forth and multiply. To make disciples who make disciples.

We have won a different kind of jackpot, but a far superior one.

All the best

Peter
