Hearing God
Hello,
Like many people in the UK, I woke this morning to the sound of wind outside as storm Éowyn made landfall on the British Isles. As I lay in bed listening to the ferocious sounds, I was reminded of a passage in the Bible where the prophet Elijah encounters God:
“A great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.” (1 King 19:11-12 ESV)
It is only in the stillness and silence that at last Elijah is able to hear God speaking to him. While it may not always be wind, earthquakes and fire that distract us, in the noise and business of our lives, it is easy for us to miss God’s words to us.
Like Elijah, we need to slow down and make the time and space to hear the voice of God.
Warm regards,
Gavin
