Trade tariffs

Hello,

I flew into Canada this week and one of the topics everyone is talking about is the trade tariffs that America has imposed upon Canada. In response, Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on American goods crossing the border.

As I listened to discussions about how this would impact trade between the two countries, I was reminded of the Old Testament phrase “an eye for an eye”. I.e. the concept of if someone hurts you, you hurt them back.

Interestingly, this is one of the topics that Jesus addresses in his famous Sermon on the Mount. He encouraged his followers not to repay evil with evil, but, instead to repay evil with good – to love not just your neighbours, but also your enemies.

Is this possible on a geopolitical level? Many would argue it just isn’t feasible, but what would it look like if countries around the world decided to look out for each other instead of compete against each other?

Jesus gives us the answer: it would look like the Kingdom of God.

Warm regards,

Gavin
