Overcoming

Hello,

“You’ve just been slapped by the fish.”

Was a tweet posted by Grimsby Town football club after their shock win over Manchester United this week. On paper, the win makes no sense. Manchester is the bigger and more successful club, with greater resources and star talent. Yet, despite the odds, Grimsby Town managed to emerge from their contest victorious.

This kind of victory by the underdog is often describe as a David and Goliath story, referring to the Biblical story where a young shepherd boy called David won a decisive victory for Israel by defeating the armoured giant Goliath. It was an event that changed David’s life and set things in motion for him to eventually become Israel’s king.

But David’s story is more than just a feel good tale. It is a tale of having faith in God even when the odds seem to be stacked against us. Of trusting God’s promises even when things seem hopeless.

While fans of Grimsby Town FC will no doubt spend the next few days celebrating, those of us who follow in the footsteps of David, and place our trust in God, have even more reasons to celebrate.

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith|” 1 John 5:4 (ESV).

Warm regards,

Gavin
