A message to the President of the United States

Hello,

In a recent fundraising pitch Donald Trump made a comment that caught my eye. With reference to the war between Russia and Ukraine he said, ‘If I can save 7,000 people a week from being killed, I think that’s pretty good – I want to try to get to heaven if possible. I’m hearing that I’m not doing well. I am really at the bottom of the totem pole. But if I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons.’

The universal human experience is that all human beings ‘have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23 NIVUK) placing us at ‘the bottom of the totem pole’. But if I could possibly save 7,000 people a week (either physically or spiritually) this would not be a reason for my salvation, which is not attained by my works but through God’s grace (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9). Salvation is not transactional and does not come through the ‘art of the deal’ but through the shed blood of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:7).

The message of the gospel is that “if you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved…Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:9, 13). This is a message of good news for all people – Let’s not keep it to ourselves.

In Christian love,
Barry Robinson
