In the UK it looks like we might have yet another government in waiting!
I wonder, will we ever learn from the patterns of history? Details may change, but often things feel the same for ordinary people like you and me. Note this quote from the American writer, Mark Twain: “The past does not repeat itself, but it rhymes.”
In the Bible, towards the end of the history of the kingdom of Judah, there existed a pattern of confusion and ungovernability One monarch lasted three months, another 11 years, the third another three months, and the last again for 11 years!
Fascinatingly, some time later, in the book of Daniel, there is the story of another king called Belshazzar, who reigned for just three short years. He had a dream in which he saw the infamous Writing on the Wall, a prediction of not only his own downfall, but also of the the whole of the Babylonian empire! Daniel, who had “a keen mind” and was able “to solve difficult problems” (Daniel 5:12, 15), helped the king understand his fate. Without doubt, we could do with a Daniel today!
Of course, we should pray for and support those in charge over us, but sometimes I wonder whether the writing is on the wall for most, if not all, of the world’s governments?
In one way, I hope so, and then we can welcome the return of Jesus Christ, our Lord, on whose gentle shoulders the government of peace will rest.
