An unchanging kingdom in changing times
This week the United Kingdom enters a new political chapter with the appointment of a new Prime Minister. Whether we welcome such change with hope, caution, or uncertainty, it reminds us that every government is temporary and how quickly leaders are replaced, and policy and priorities can change.
For Christians, however, our deepest confidence does not rest in political systems or personalities. We are grateful for those who serve in public office, and scripture encourages us to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1–2), but our ultimate hope is found in the unchanging reign of Jesus Christ, whose kingdom cannot be shaken. Only Christ’s reign is eternal and will ultimately bring lasting peace, full justice and total equity.
Perhaps our first question this week should not be, ‘What will this new government do for us?’ but rather, ‘How is Christ calling me to serve others today?’ The answer may be as simple as praying for our leaders, speaking graciously to those with whom we disagree, or encouraging someone who is anxious about the future. Such ordinary acts of love are never insignificant. They are visible signs of Christ’s unchangeable kingdom already at work in the world through his people.
