The Lamb who died for his sheep

I love driving through the countryside near my home. On my way into town, I pass several flocks of sheep, grazing or resting in beautiful green fields. A feeling of peace always comes over me as I look at them, seemingly content and obviously in no danger. I’ve never seen a shepherd or anyone interacting with the sheep, but maybe my timing has been off.

Sheep need care, guidance and protection. When Jesus called himself our Good Shepherd, he implied that he would provide all three, and even more. In Psalm 23, he promised to lead us, his sheep, beside still waters and to green pastures, and he also said he would restore our souls. He comforts us, takes care of us when enemies intend harm and causes our ‘cups’ to overflow with his goodness and love.

Having Jesus as our shepherd means that when we learn his voice and follow him, we lack absolutely nothing. We know if danger comes close, he won’t abandon us and run off to protect himself. But the best part is that he, as the true shepherd, is not only willing to lay down his life for us, he actually did. Sacrificing himself on the cross cemented our relationship with Jesus, the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. He is our permanent, loving, protecting, providing Shepherd who will take care of us forever.
