Does God use us for his purposes?
We sometimes hear Christians talk about being used for God’s purposes, which always makes me think of minions or drones, lined up and waiting for their assignments. God doesn’t need us to achieve his purposes and I believe he doesn’t use us either. But what are his purposes?
In Hebrews 2:10 (NLT), we read: ‘God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation.’ This verse seems to be saying his purpose is to bring us to glory and into our salvation, which is something we can’t do for ourselves or for others.
When my dad died twenty-two years ago this month, I realised that God had accomplished his purposes with his life. The transformation I saw in my dad was proof to me that God had brought him both to salvation and to glory. God didn’t use others to work that transformation in him, but he sent people to walk beside my dad, encourage him and help him along the right path, as we all do for each other.
God doesn’t use us to fulfill his purposes – we are his purpose – and we are all in need of each other to give a helping hand, an encouraging word and to pray, as God himself, through the sufferings of his son, brings us to glory and salvation.
