‘Blob time’
And let us not grow weary of doing good…
Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
The members of the Galatian church were not the only ones that Paul encouraged to not grow weary. He told the Thessalonians too. The trouble is, we do, don’t we? Hence the title of this Word of Life: Blob time. ‘Blob time’ is when you are so tired that all you can do is collapse into a chair, pick up the remote, turn on the TV and ‘blob’. Who cares what is on – there must be something to watch. A ‘blob’ is something you feel like when you are knackered – if I can use that word to describe the times when both body and mind have had enough, gone on strike, and we need to rest and do something mindless for a while and wait to recover.
For the fortunate ones to whom this is an alien concept – long may you remain ignorant. For those who read this and say – yes, that’s how it is sometimes – let’s take a look at whether we need to feel guilty, when we are sprawled on a sofa, maybe with some sort of drink, and are whiling away the time watching something that really has nothing to do with our Christian lives, or with the love of Jesus and our participation in his work.
The fact is God knows what we are made of. After all, he made us. He made us so that we get tired and need rest. He made us to grow old and slow down. He doesn’t actually need us for his work either. But he has graciously included us.
So what to do about these ‘blob times’? If, like me, you have them, the answer is to accept them. Accept they are a reality in life. They are not wasted time. Use them: use them to recover, use them as ’time-out’, use them to allow our mind and body rest and recuperation. Our spirit may be willing, God’s Spirit is with us, but for a time we need to just stop.
Prayer
Our Father, you made us, you know our limitations. You know our desire to serve you, whenever and wherever we can. We thank you that you have made it possible for us to do so, to serve you and each other. May we rest without troubled minds and be ready to serve, whether in weakness or in strength. Amen.
