Why am I here?
He destined us for adoption as his children through Christ Jesus, according to the good pleasure of his will…
Ephesians 1:5 (NRSV)
‘Why am I here?’
‘Because God wanted you!’
Is there anything more life affirming than being wanted, wished into being, created because God wants you? He wants each and every human being who is on the planet, was on the planet, and will be on the planet.
Why, you may ask? Was it because God was lonely? Not at all, for he exists in a fellowship of three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Was he bored? Not at all, for the persons of this divine fellowship delight in each other. At his baptism the Spirit came down from heaven in the form of a dove and rested on Jesus, while the Father called out for all to hear: “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17).
No, it was from overflowing love that together God decided to create us and welcome us to share in their amazing love: “Let us make humankind in our image…” (Genesis 1:26); and as our header scripture says, ‘according to the good pleasure of his will…’.
He wants to adopt us, embrace us, and fill us with his love, so – “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 4:7b). Instead, let us open our hearts to him and thank him for his amazing invitation, and his love for us.
Prayer
Love Divine: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you for your amazing love that welcomes us, every minute of every day, into your joyous circle of holy love. Amen.
