BFF (Best Friend Forever)

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends…”
John 15:15 (ESV)

My children love to tease. We are a family who like to play around and make jokes. For example the children would often say, ‘I don’t like this dinner Daddy….I love it!’ So it wasn’t much of a surprise when my eldest daughter said to me, in a very serious voice, ‘Mummy, you aren’t my best friend anymore…because Jesus is my best friend now!’ 

Well, first of all, as a parent trying to raise children in the faith whilst living in a very secular world, this obviously brings great joy to our hearts and we rejoice in all that the Lord is doing in their lives. However, this led me to a deeper appreciation of the verse above, where Jesus calls us his friends. This can be hard for us to comprehend when 1 Timothy 1:17 describes the Lord as ‘…the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God..’, and when Exodus 15:11 says, “Who is like you, O Lord…majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?” 

He is our Lord God almighty! Yet, this is the same God who loves us, walks with us, always has time for us. He is the best listener, the wisest counsellor, the kindest companion and as our very best friend, He went so far as to lay down His life for us. What a friend we have in Jesus, He is all of that and more to us. 

Our eight-year-old daughter seems to grasp this reality with ease, so it is a challenge for us to also realise the truth of who Jesus is, to us, and to everyone who looks to Him. And for those who’ve not yet realised their need for him – He is the best, best friend you could ever hope for.

Prayer
My best friend, you who walks beside me, takes my hand, sits with me, runs with me. You who laugh when I laugh and cry when I cry. I love you, my very best friend in all the world. Amen.
