The treasure hunt

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
James 3:17 (NIV)

On a rainy day when the grandchildren could not play in the garden, my husband and I would sometimes organise a treasure hunt in the house to occupy them. My husband would place treats all over the house and bedlam would ensue. If we had simply sat them down and given them the sweet, they would have been pleased, of course, but to search for it, and ultimately find it, causing all sorts of havoc in the interim, was so much more fun.

The more confused and alarming the world becomes the more we need the most precious ‘treat’ of all – wisdom from our Father in heaven. In Proverbs 2:4 we are encouraged to find wisdom, to ‘…look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure…’. Although the passage is addressed to a ‘son’ exhorting him to find wisdom in his life, the message does apply to all ages. My late beloved husband used to say, ‘Common sense is not common.’ As I listen to television and read newspapers, I know he was right.

Proverbs 2:6 tells us that wisdom comes from the Lord. There are wonderful attributes of wisdom mentioned in this chapter: discretion, understanding, uprightness, blamelessness, righteousness, and justice. All this is promised, if we ask Him for it.

Returning to my metaphor of the treasure hunt, initially the game causes upheaval and chaos; that is what life offers us from time to time. But if we seek the treasure of wisdom from the Lord, we will enjoy the full comprehension of being His child and all the blessings that our inheritance holds, thanks to our Saviour who is eager to impart to us – wisdom.

Prayer
Our great God and loving Abba, thank you for giving us the Holy Spirit to lead us into all wisdom. May we join with him as we follow Jesus in our Christian walk. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
