Great is your faithfulness
… great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:23 (NIV)
All I have needed your hand has provided, great is your faithfulness, Lord, unto me. 1
My dog, Darley, waits impatiently for his lunch. As I prepare it, I have a thought. You know when you get a dog, you acquire all the bits: food bowl, lead, dog bed, and more. And what do you get from the dog? Love, that’s what you get. Dog owners know that their dog likes to be close to them when resting. Last night my dog curled up on the sofa with me and my wife, right next to me, moving his head until it rested in my hand with his paws. That’s typical!
All of us receive gifts and blessings from our generous God: ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights…’ (James 1:17). As well as physical blessings we receive all the spiritual blessings of the New Covenant God has bestowed upon us by his grace, through our faith in Jesus Christ.
So as your dog waits upon your goodness to provide the things they need, so we wait for our heavenly Father to provide the things we need. If we can experience so much love when we interact with our pets, how much more love must God have for those who are his very own children?
And notice the words of the song quoted above: ‘All I have needed ’ – not necessarily wanted. After more than 30 years in the Church I have not wanted anything more. Great is your faithfulness indeed!
Prayer
Holy Father, thank you for all the things you have provided. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
