Home is where He is

As much fun as a vacation or trip can be, it’s always good to get home. Even after being gone for a few hours, coming back to the familiar place and my own things gives me a sense of peace and gratitude. I’ve got in the habit of thanking God by saying “there and back.”

The appeal of staying and being home is stronger now than ever and even though I’ve always been a homebody, I’ve become more so the last few years. There are several reasons – all of the traveling I did in my former life, getting older, and then perhaps a bit of inertia caused by the COVID lockdown. But I know the house I now occupy won’t be permanent, and neither will this body. As Christians, we know our true home is not this life – we are only squatters, so to speak.

Even though we know our physical life is temporary, and as some say, our true home is in heaven, we can also feel at home here, if we are in Christ. Home isn’t only a far-off future thing – home is Jesus. When we live in him and he lives in us, he becomes our abode and we are his. In John 15:4, Jesus said we are to abide, remain, dwell, and live in him and he will abide, remain, dwell, and live in us.

He is our true home, both now and forever.
