Our North Star

For those born within the last twenty-five years, it might be hard to believe people used to navigate by looking at stars. They had no radar, no GPS, no satellites, and no way to communicate. Sailors, in particular, used the North Star to find their way around on the vast, dark ocean. Those of us born in the last century can easily remember when we had no mobile phones or GPS to help us get around. I must admit I’m quite dependent on GPS for help driving in unfamiliar territory, including my own area.

Stars and modern technology are helpful when we don’t know our way around, but in life, we need more than those for navigating the most difficult areas of life. No technology can help us when we’re struggling with relationships, finances, or health. Like me, you’ve probably experienced times when you had no idea what to do and felt powerless and out of control in difficult circumstances.

One of my favourite verses is 2 Chronicles 20:12 (NIV), at the end of Jehoshaphat’s prayer: ‘For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.’ The true North Star, Jesus, is the one to whom we can look for everything we need. He is the one who answered the prayer of Jehoshaphat, and he answers our prayers now. Like the people, as we stand before the Lord and wait (v.13), we will be able to hear him say: “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (v.15). He will lead, guide, and fight our battles for us as we keep our eyes fixed on him.
