Our love compels us
This is the first in a series of studies on the subject of sharing our faith.
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”
Matthew 28:19 (NIV)
If I’ve ever bought my Mum a gift, no matter what, she immediately wants to share it. Whether it’s a box of chocolates, or an afternoon tea, or perhaps tickets to see a show – even then she’ll suggest that she buys another couple of tickets so that we can join her!
Our faith is a gift, and that gift enables us to see that Jesus Christ is the saviour of the world: your saviour and mine. He brings truth and light and hope into the world and through the grace of Jesus we live full and complete lives, in freedom and in expectant anticipation of all the wonderful things He is going to do in our lives – how beautiful!
Now why would we want to keep that gift to ourselves? Jesus doesn’t want us to just be content knowing who He is, He wants us to tell the world so that others can experience this wonderful gift of faith. It’s too good to keep that knowledge to ourselves.
If we love people, then we want them to know the love Jesus has for them: love that leads to salvation and eternal life. Our love for our friends, family, neighbours and colleagues compels us to share the love God has for them – the personal, intimate, redeeming, genuine and life-giving love.
We, as Christians, believe that Jesus wants us to tell the world about Himself, as instructed in the header scripture. We really do want to share the gospel, but if you’ve never really shared Jesus with anyone before, it can be hard to know where to start. It all begins with prayer. Pray for His courage, His wisdom, His timing and for Him to put on your heart the ‘who’. We can take more time to study together what scripture says about sharing our faith and prepare for the Lord to answer our prayers. How exciting!
Prayer
Father, may you prepare our hearts and minds to tell the world all about you. As you instructed us to go – let us go in faith, and in trust, and in love for those you died to save and want a relationship with. For the sake of our Lord Jesus, and in His name, Amen.
