The heart of Christianity

Being Christian means different things to different people. Most of us, including those who believe in God, carry around preconceived notions, probably passed on to them during childhood, or picked up at school, from friends or family, or even from the media. Some think it’s all about going to church, praying, reading the Bible and being a nice person. Others might say it’s about being forgiven and covered by grace. Still, others think it’s only about going to heaven and not going to hell. But it’s so much more than all of that.

The heart of Christianity is found in the relationship of Jesus and his Father. Donald Fairbairn, in his book Life in the Trinity, said, ‘Christ is the natural, only-begotten Son of God, and in a way that is both similar and different, Christians become adopted sons and daughters of God, thus sharing by grace in the fellowship the Son has with the Father by nature.’

In Christ, through the Spirit, we are brought into that relationship and are able to share in the love, intimacy and union of the Trinity. Everything in the life of a Christian flows into us through Jesus’ relationship with his Father. Through that loving communion, the Holy Spirit enables us to know the Father and enjoy all of the benefits, privileges and love that come from being his sons and daughters.
