The who question

Most of us who were born more than (ahem) a few years ago probably remember learning about the 5 Ws and the H. It was the first thing I heard about during a class on journalism. Who, what, where, when, why and how are the essential elements in reporting. A writer couldn’t leave any of them unanswered as that wouldn’t constitute a good accounting of events.

When we read the Bible, we also need to keep the 5 Ws and the H in mind, but one of them is infinitely more important than the others and that is the Who question. Whenever we read it, we need to have it in the back, or maybe even the front, of our minds. Who is the passage talking about, pointing to, a symbol of, a precursor or a type of? Well, there’s really only one answer and that is Jesus. And we also need to remember just who he is. He is love and everything he says and does flows out of the love that has always existed between Father, Son and Spirit.

Sometimes we’ll read something and think, wow, I don’t understand why that happened, or why God let that happen, but when we remember who he is, we can see it from a different perspective. We’ll remember God’s ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). And more importantly, as much as we can, we need to really get to know him for ourselves, rather than listening to what other people say about him. Always ask the Who question and always remember the answer is love.
