Living by faith

Faith is an interesting topic. In some respects, it’s very simple and in others, it can be quite complicated, depending on whom you ask. A lot has been written about it and everyone has an opinion. Jesus talked about faith a lot too, telling people who simply asked for healing that their faith had made them well. He said if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we could move a mountain into the sea. He also talked about coming to him with childlike trust.

Paul also talked about faith, but the verse that has always made me think twice is Galatians 2:20, which says: “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (CSB). Most translations say something similar, but it might be better stated as other translations have it: the faith of the Son of God or the faithfulness of the Son of God.

Knowing that we live by the faith of Jesus is encouraging to anyone who has ever been accused of not having enough faith. Where does faith even come from? It doesn’t come from inside of our hearts, which are deceitful and desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9). On our own, we don’t have enough faith, but true faith comes from Jesus himself. As a human, he had perfect faith in his Father, and now as the risen Saviour, he shares that faith with us. We do live by faith – the faith he gives us and enlarges as we exercise and grow in his faith.
