A friend in our loneliness

Loneliness has become a big problem in recent years, especially in young people. The internet and social media have exacerbated this problem because even though time on social media has increased the quantity of social interaction, the quality has decreased. Lack of face-to-face contact and increasingly busy schedules lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness.
All of us experience such feelings from time to time. You can, of course, read about all of the causes, health consequences and ways to overcome loneliness, and some of them may help, especially spending time with others. But there is one time-tested, guaranteed method to deal with it, no matter where we are, in the company of friends or alone – turning to Jesus.
When we are lonely, we aren’t lonely alone – he is lonely with us. He will sit with us in our sadness and isolation. He will be right there while we’re having a pity party or moaning about how no one understands or cares – without judgment or reproach. He lets us cry it out, gives us a handkerchief so to speak, and comforts us with his presence. ‘What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!’ 1
Remembering that Jesus is our truest, best friend who sits with us and shares in our loneliness never fails to lift us up, raises our eyes to him who gives us strength to endure and puts praise on our lips.
