Long live the king

A little over two years ago, the world watched as Queen Elizabeth, who had reigned over the UK for 70 years, was laid to rest. It was a time of sadness for the country, but especially for her family. But life goes on, and Elizabeth’s son Charles ascended the throne. For over a thousand years, when one monarch died, another took his or her place. The king, or in this case the queen, is dead; long live the king.

Jesus was labelled the King of the Jews when he was nailed to the cross. It turned out to be a short reign though, because within hours, he was dead. To everyone watching, it was over. The king was dead and there was nothing left to do but go fishing. But something unimaginable happened – Jesus was resurrected and became king, not through the death of another, but through his own death. But that’s not how it normally works. As Vizzini said in The Princess Bride – Inconceivable!

In the history of the world, a king had never risen to power through his own death. But of course, Jesus isn’t just any king – he’s the one who humbly came to earth as one of us – as one of his subjects so to speak. He lived as we live, he died as we die, but because of the unlimited power of God, as well as his brilliance and creativity, through his death, Jesus became the King of kings and Lord of lords, the King of the universe and the King of our hearts. The King is dead, long live the King!
