It goes where it wants

It’s been raining a lot the past few weeks. Water has been running down from the road and carving little channels in the unpaved part of the driveway. The water goes where it wants, regardless of where I might like it to go. When it finally stops raining (in a few months), the channels will need to be filled in and new ones made for better drainage next rainy season.

In Dallas Willard’s book, Renewing the Christian Mind, he talked about inviting (or perhaps including) Jesus into each new situation and relationship as we engage with others. We can will or desire the peace and joy we are experiencing to pass from us like living waters to those with whom we are engaged. The living water will go where it wants, regardless of what we think or want, no matter how we might try to steer or control it, but we can and should expect God to accomplish good in each situation. Water goes where it wants, the same as the wind. Jesus likened the Holy Spirit to the wind during his conversation with Nicodemus (John 3:8). We know he works, but we don’t know how: ‘the intricacies are beyond our comprehension.1 What we do know is that he is always working for the good of everyone, and if we will put our trust in him, and ‘let’ him do what he wills, his peace and joy will be ours.
