Saviour

And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant…

Luke 1:46-48 (NIV)

Emmanuel, God with us, Messiah, our deliverer, Saviour, my knight in shining armour who has delivered me from my darkness and sin. In my darkest moment, I did not believe in a God who loved me. My life lay shattered before me, where is this God whom others talk about? How this thought must be replicated over again all over the world. I can almost hear the cries rising to heaven’s gate. Surely God hears, and so he sent us a Saviour to rescue us; his only Son to deliver us from our darkness and pain.

We are told in Deuteronomy that Jeshurun, God’s beloved and dear people of Israel, had abandoned the one who loved them and provided for them. They rejected the one Rock, their Saviour (Deuteronomy 32:15,18). And yet God never really left them, but he allowed them to go their own way. Verse four of this chapter tells us that he is ‘A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.’ In his temporary silence, they learned the grace of God. And

‘God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.’ (Acts 5:31).

They would and could call out to God again, knowing that he is not only a God who saves but also a God who loves them and wants only the best for them. They could ask as in Psalm 25:5

‘Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.’ I must repeat that, not only is God with us, not only is he our deliverer, but also our Saviour who has brought us back into a right relationship with him. When he saves, he saves completely, destroying even death so that we may have life eternal with him,

(2 Timothy 1:10).

We can put our hope in the living God who is the Saviour of all people (1 Timothy 4:10). He provides for all despite our blindness to him and how he moves in our lives, and he loves us all, especially those who believe in him and honour his name. As we continually learn of and embrace our Saviour, we grow in his grace, we learn to love this Saviour Jesus Christ as he loves us. This love of our God and Saviour helps us to reach out to those around us to draw them into this grace and love as well.

We can sing along with Mary that our God was and is mindful of our lowly state, our humble beginnings and weaknesses, and yet he has done great things for us, and has brought us into a loving relationship with him. He has great plans for us all. He will do many mighty things for us, and in them show mercy to all mankind.

Are you ready to say along with Mary as in Luke 1:45, “Blessed is she [he] who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her [him]!”?

Prayer
To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy-to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” 1

1 Jude vv.24-25.
