For several years, I’ve been practising the use of a word for the year to help me focus on a single concept of spiritual growth. The name of this practice is ‘My One Word’ and you can find details on the website of the same name. The word comes from God, as you pray and ask for the direction of your spiritual life for the next year. 

I don’t have a word for the year yet, but it’s not a problem – It will come sooner or later, as it always does. I believe the Holy Spirit gives words to bring us back to the truth we have in Jesus. As it says in John 14:26 (NLT), “But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” Whenever I thought of my word for 2024 – know – I turned my mind toward knowing Jesus, which is eternal life (John 17:3).

Having a ‘one word’ might not be for everyone, but all of us can benefit from the reminder we find in Psalm 32:8 (TPT) “I hear the Lord saying, ‘I will stay close to you, instructing and guiding you along the pathway for your life. I will advise you along the way, and lead you forth with my eyes as your guide'”.

Let’s all ask God to help us, by the power of his Spirit, to be teachable and willing to be instructed and guided by him. Let’s make this new year one of humble waiting on God’s guidance and let him show us the way. Happy New Year!
