The unbreakable bond

In the past, wedding ceremonies always included the line, ‘What God has joined together, let no one put asunder.’ With 50% of marriages ending in divorce, why bother saying it anymore? Long marriages are becoming a rarity. The bonds of matrimony aren’t always strong. The bonds between mothers and their children are usually very strong – there are very few things that can disrupt them. But even those can break.

There is one marriage that won’t end in divorce, one bond that can never be broken – the marriage of the Lamb. In Revelation 19:7-9, a wedding takes place between the Lamb and his bride. The bond between Jesus and the church can never be broken because Jesus himself is the living bond between God and humanity. God has permanently united himself with us in the person of Christ. We are united for all time in him.

Because Jesus was, is and will forever be one of us, a human in every sense of the word, the love of God has reached down to embrace human life, to reconcile us with him and each other, and to bring us into fellowship with himself. When Jesus and his bride – all of us who are in him – celebrate at the wedding feast to end all wedding feasts, no one will say anything about a break up – ‘it won’t last’ – because this is one bond that will never come apart. This is one marriage that will last forever and ever, amen.
