Our journey to the Cross

Like Jesus, we also have a journey to the cross. Just as it is part of who God is, so the cross becomes part of who we are, as we follow Jesus and live in the Spirit.

Ours is a bit different from that of Jesus. Ours starts when we go under the waters of baptism. Even though baptism is symbolic of our death and rebirth in Christ, we are just getting started on our journey of dying to self. It takes time to learn, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to ‘always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body,’ as it says in 2 Corinthians 4:10.

Our journey to the cross means we see ourselves on the cross next to him, look in his eyes and hear him say, today, you will be with me in paradise. We all need to come face to face with Jesus on the cross. And we need to keep it in front of our eyes, the same way it’s always in front of God.

Let’s embrace the cross the same way Jesus did, with our faces set like flint to share in his crucifixion and suffering, and as Paul said in Philippians 3:10-11, that we may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible we may attain the resurrection from the dead.
